London Youngsters Enjoy 'Come & Try' Day

The London Summer of Sports backed 'come & try' sessions at Crystal Palace proved a great hit. Children from a number of London Schools took advantage of the occasion and were coached by members of the Province of Quebec handball teams who were on the return leg of their European tour, having competed in Granollers (Spain) and Partille (Sweden). The Canadian players were good sports, allowing them to join their teams for short games, whilst the remainder of the 80 strong squad gave great vocal encouragement to the young Londoners.

Brentwood Festival of Sport

Handball made it back to Essex in true style recently when players from Great Dane and Olympia generously gave of their time and came along to the Brentwood Centre, putting on demonstration games during the towns’ Festival of Sport.

Handball, along with a dozen other sports, was on show providing an opportunity for spectators and fellow participants alike, to watch different sports and have a go in, ‘come & try’ sessions. Around thirty children came to grips with some basic ball handling exercises before being let lose in what can only be described as, freestyle handball, and great fun was had by all!

One of the interested spectators, seeing the game for the first time, was the Mayor of Brentwood. He was introduced to some of the players and remarked how much he had enjoyed their demonstration and expressed an interest in seeing the game return to the borough.

This handball initiative was the first to be organised by the recently formed Brentwood Handball Development Group, with further plans under way during the summer to encourage local schoolchildren to play the game.

A touch of nostalgia

'With player-coach Paul Rolls of Brentwood '72 choosing an experimental England squad to view potential candidates for the England-Scotland 'Olympic Day' match, there was little sign of the drama to come as they coasted to a 12-1 win over Ireland in the opening match.' .....................

................'England in fact looked dead and buried at 0-5 down with 7 minutes played. Tony Tropp of Brentwood '72 at last broke their duck though and by half-time they had clawed it back to 5-7. The fightback continued as the English capitalised on a Mick Hegarty '2-minutes' to level at 7-7 only to then fall behind again 7-9.'
