Former British Champions Brentwood HC 72 come to the rescue

When a recent ad was placed in the Brentwood Weekly News by the Brentwood centre offering handball training, little did they know that the ad would attract interest from former GB handball players offering support.

The Brentwood Centre has been identified by London 2012 as a training centre for the London Olympics. It has no handball markings, no handball goals, but it was once home in the 70's and 80's to one of Britain's highest achieving clubs - Brentwood HC 72 . The club competed in Europe and some of the players were in the GB team that met Poland and Norway ahead of the Montreal Olympics. One of the team of that time, John Compton, remembers, though you would think he would rather forget, the match against Poland. The score was 50-5, no guesses which team scored 50, then to their credit they did go on to win bronze, recalls John.

The 'old boys' have offered their services to the Brentwood Centre to introduce handball for the future Brentwood HC members and they would be delighted to hear from players who were around on the handball scene in the 70's and 80's.

John can be contacted by mail johncompton@talktalk.net or Tom Smith smithtom@dsl.pipex.com
