World Class Programme - Athlete Update

Hi,

 

my name is Huw Goodwin, and I am one of the athletes on the British Handball Association's World Class Development Programme - that's right, Britain has a handball team! There is a squad of men and a squad of women both based out at the Idraetshojskolen Arhus, in Denmark, training full time and playing for club sides in the area. The idea is that we will be exposed to greater levels of handball, in a country that sees the sport like the British see football.

 

We are embarking upon a tough and arduous journey to eventually compete at the London 2012 Olympics. We have to learn quick, as we are still regarded as a developing nation and, to my knowledge, have never qualified for the Olympics (or any major handball tournament? Someone might be able to correct me on that one!). My learning curve needs to be particularly steep, as I have only just begun playing the sport. I have come across from having a full time job, to going through the Talent Identification process, to living out in Denmark; and all this within 12 months! I had previously played rugby union and rugby league to an okay level but was ready to begin playing more socially and get myself a proper job (to pay off student debts). However, somehow I have ended up becoming a full time handball player, and being involved with the Great Britain squad! I don't regret a thing, and am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I'm living the dream and hope that one day it will culminate in the Olympic final, and a Gold Medal for GB Handball! Who knows...

 

In the meantime, there is a lot of training to be done (we have physical testing tomorrow!)... One year ago I had never touched a handball; one year later I'm playing handball full time; four and a half years from now I'm competing at the Olympics...?!

Great Britain win in France

The Great Britain Women's team secured their first international victory of the new era beating Luxembourg by 36 to 26. The GB team were once again playing in Beauvais, the same arena that the Presidents Cup is being played in but this time they were watched by the President of the IHF who had instigated GB's participation at this event.

Coach Morten Arvidsson had been pleased with the defensive performance against the Police team but felt that the GB team did not exploit this with fast counter attacking. It was different in this match, with the defence again looking strong but this time the team worked hard on the fast breaks and got their rewards with a great first 5 minutes, opening up a 4 – 1 lead. In fact the first goal was scored by Louise Jukes one of the TID players who has been playing handball only a few months having previously played Hockey to England junior (U18) level.

Over the next 15 minutes GB attacked with great energy and Yvette Frings was in fine form, scoring 4 goals in quick succession. At the other end Cerys Walker was having a fantastic game in goal saving 8 out of the 13 shots she faced. GB pulled away to a 13 – 4 lead but then suffered a mini collapse which lasted for 10 minutes. Luxembourg came right back in the game scoring 7 goals to only 2 from GB,

After half time however, GB gradually regained control with the team again working well in defence and setting up counter attacks which 15 year old Chloe Lam- Moores accepted greedily, scoring 6 goals. All the team got in on the scoring act, with Britt Goodwin also contributing 7 goals but Frings continued her goal scoring until she was harshly red carded for a third 2 minutes, having taken an earlier 2 minutes for a team mate by a mistake from the referee. She finished the match as top scorer with 8 goals.

After the match the squad posed for photos with Dr Moustafa, President of the IHF who was impressed with the progress this young side is making under coach Morten Arvidsson.

Mini handball a hit at South London School

A new sports hall has prompted Dulwich College Prep. School, in SE London to take up Handball, with organiser Mark Mitchell now running a club of 20 boys, aged 11-13, who have just been formed into two squads to set up their own mini league. 

After 4 matches, it's all square, with 2 draws, one on the school's Open Day exhibition match, and a win apiece for Dinamo DCPS and the Dulwich Olympians! 

Mr Mitchell is desperately seeking club/school opposition at this age group, though, as the boys' enthusiasm and skills are growing by the day. With an eye to 2012, at least four of the lads are showing real promise, with fast-break jump shots and agile goalkeeping top of the menu, and they would obviously like to share their enjoyment of this simple, but fast and exciting, sport with any other groups of youngsters from, preferably, the south London / Surrey / Kent area.

GB Women v French Police - Match Report

GB women put up a credible performance against the French National Police team in Beauvais the warm up match to the World Championship matches.

Although losing 23 to 13, the team can be pleased with many aspects of the match, especially the defence which was very good throughout. Coach Morten Arvidsson was looking for a strong performance in defence, which would then lead to counter attack possibilities and although the defence was indeed good, the team did not exploit this with the fast breaks, which is normally where they are strong. The team were also looking at breaking the game down into 10 minute blocks, to see if they could increase the spells where they were effective in all areas.

GB started the stronger and quickly took a 3:1 lead over their more experienced opponents but the police team gradually pulled back into the game and at half time were 10 – 6 ahead but this was a good first half, especially the first 20 minutes for GB.

The Second half started badly for GB with lapses in concentration and too many technical errors. GB were also hampered by injuries to Britt Goodwin and Kelsi Fairbrother, which put huge pressure on captain Lynn McCafferty and left back Lenka Kocisova. The French Police pulled away in a strong  20 minute spell where they scored 12 goals to GB's 5. The coach brought back Sarah Hargreaves in goal and she saved 7 out of 11 shots and at one point the French side did not score for 10 minutes. GB finished strongly which was encouraging, only losing the last 10minutes 4:3 which gave a final score of 13 – 23 for the French side. McCafferty led the way with 6 goals, with Kocisova scoring 4 goals.

The team now have one more day of training before facing Luxembourg when they hope that their injury problems will be solved.

In the main event, France suffered a shock defeat to Angola.

GB Women to play French National Police Team in Beauvais

The Great Britain Women's squad moved from Nantes to Beauvais following the completion of the preliminary rounds of the women's World Cup in France. Having watched Germany and Korea progress to the main round, the GB teams minds moved to their own matches. On Thursday the squad plays the French National Police Team in an afternoon match at the main arena before the Presidents Cup rounds start in the evening.
This will be a tough challenge for the squad but an excellent warm up for the international against Luxembourg on Saturday.The squad has no major injuries apart from left back Lada Dungworth who injured her back just prior to the camp, so there will be a need for the remaining key back players Lynn McCafferty, Britt Goodwin and Yvette Frings to take on the additional responsibility.
Coach Morten Arvidsson took the squad for a light training session on Wednesday night after their journey, working on the counter attack and defensive positioning. This followed a session of video analysis of their game against St Sebastian as well as reviewing the defense work of France and Korea.
Good news for the squad is the welcome return of left winger Holly Lam-Moores from the Haslingden club, as she is now on the way back after a long layoff with a back injury.
Following the training camp, eight of the squad will return to the Handball Academy in Aarhus for the start of the spring term. They are: Cerys Walker, Lada Dungworth, Louise Jukes, Laura Innes , Sophie Keen , Holly Lam – Moores and Sarah Hargreaves
